The Official Definition of KODOKAN JUDO

For the Record...

Kodokan Judo is defined by the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo, Japan as, "A Martial Art founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano himself  on his reformation and adaptation of several classical jujutsu systems" (from the Kodokan New Japanese-English Dictionary of Judo).

Published August 2000 with forward written by Yukimitsu Kano, President of the Kodokan.

It is a historical fact, that the Kodokan was re-opened after the World War II in the "Eyes of the Allied Forces" not as a "martial arts institute" (promoting skills for warfare), but instead as a "sports center" (for recreation).  Yet to this day, the "sport blue gi" is not allowed in the Kodokan Judo Institute.

Kodokan Judo has ALWAYS been more than just a sport...

The Kodokan Judo Institute remains INDEPENDENT and strongly promotes the Teaching of ALL the Kodokan Judo Waza & Kata.
